Velddrif is a small town on the West Coast of South Africa, about 2km from the Berg River mouth. Originally an agricultural area, today Velddrif is often used as a name for a much larger area, including the small town of Laaiplek and the riverside development of Port Owen.
These towns have become popular destinations for holiday travellers over the years, because of the mixture of friendly hospitality, rich fynbos and wild flowers, a wide and tranquil river, and of course the vast beaches of the West Coast.
The Riverhouse is situated right at the border between Port Owen and Laaiplek, on the Port Owen side.
Canoeing on the Berg River
Location: Berg River in front of The Riverhouse
The Berg River is a great area for rowing in a canoe or kayak. From The Riverhouse, it is only a short row to Port Owen and it is even possible to row up to Velddrif, where one can enjoy lunch or drinks at one of the popular river-side restaurants and pubs. Canoeing is best done in the early morning, before the sun gets too hot and the fishing traffic on the water starts picking up, not that the traffic ever gets too much.
Wild Flower Viewing
Location: Western Cape all the way to the Northern Cape
During the Western-Cape’s lively spring months, the veld around Velddrif and the surrounding areas sprouts hundreds of different wild flower species. Most often these flowers form multicoloured carpets that cover entire fields as far as the eye can see. This kind of outing is highly dependant on weather and seasonal conditions, and it is always best to explore a wide region, so as to see a wider variety of flowers.
Berg River Fishing
Location: Berg River in front of The Riverhouse
The rich fishing waters of the Berg River and the West Coast is what caused early settlers to found Velddrif. The fishing community soon turned fishing into a thriving industry, with many fishing trawlers coming in from the sea to dock in the Berg River at Laaiplek. Because Port Owen is near the mouth of the Berg River, Velddrif locals often launch their fishing boats here to go out to sea.
Fishing from one of the jetties right in front of The Riverhouse is usually extremely rewarding, because of the abundance of shad (also called elf) in the Berg River mouth.
Location: Along the Berg River
The South Westerly is ideal for kite-surfing and sailing. Young adventure seeking kite surfers are often seen making their way up the Berg River.
Velddrif is a rare spot which offers amazing flat water conditions. It’s at a river mouth therefore it’s made up of pretty wide canals where freestyle and old school riders will have a blast.
In this part of the country the southeaster wind also blows strongly throughout the high season.
Veldrif is only suited for intermediate and advanced riders.
